Van Gogh frequently painted large blooming branches of almond trees against a blue sky. Almond trees are early spring bloomers and symbolize new life. Van Gogh was inspired by the subject, composition and placement of trees in the image plane from Japanese printmaking.
The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had recently had a child, Vincent Willem. The painting was particularly special to the Van Gogh family, as Vincent Willem would later establish the Van Gogh Museum.
The Vincent Van Gogh Museum is a popular destination for art enthusiasts and showcases the artist’s work in all its might.
